About Us

Botho University was established in 1997 and has rapidly evolved over the years to become a leading multidisciplinary high-quality tertiary education provider. Botho University was one of the first local tertiary institutions in Botswana to be accredited by the Human Resources Development Council (HRDC). In Lesotho, Botho University was established in 2015 and in a short period of time, Botho established itself as one of the most preferred Tertiary Education Institutions in Lesotho. After a modest start in the beginning BU Lesotho has witnessed a sturdy growth in its enrollment numbers.

The University currently has over one thousand students across various disciplines. All the programmes offered by Botho University in Lesotho are approved by the Council on Higher Education (CHE), Lesotho. Botho University currently offers programmes through five faculties namely Faculty of Business & Accounting, Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Faculty of Health and Education and Faculty of Hospitality and Sustainable Tourism. In Lesotho, Botho University currently offers programmes under three faculties namely Faculty of Business & Accounting, Faculty of Computing and Faculty of Health and Education.

All our programmes have been developed with inputs from industry thus our graduates are ready to hit the ground running. Botho University currently offers qualifications from certificate level to master’s degree level with plans in place for doctoral programmes to be rolled out very soon. In Lesotho, Botho University currently offers bachelor’s degree level programmes with plans in place to offer certificate and master’s degree level programmes soon. With over 1000 students and over 60 staff members and growing Botho University, Lesotho is a dynamic and exciting place to be.

Botho University also offers a diverse range of programmes for in-service professionals and organizations. Under the Corporate Training Department, there are over 200 short-term professional development programmes, which can be customized to meet the client’s requirements. BU currently has campuses in 5 countries: Botho University Botswana, Botho University Lesotho, Botho University Namibia, Botho University Eswatini and the Blended & Distance Learning Campus (BDLC).

Botho University also has several partnerships with well-known regional and international institutions such as the University of Venda-RSA, KTH Royal Institute of Technology-Sweden, Black Hills State University-USA, University of Louisville-USA, Indian School of MinesIndia, Manipal University in India and recently World Tourism Forum Lucerne-Switzerland. Students studying with Botho University have an immense opportunity to take advantage of these international partnerships through student exchange programmes.

BU students have had internship programmes in India, USA, UK and Sweden amongst others, thus giving them incredible international exposure. Botho University firmly believes in providing its students with a superior learning environment. The University continually invests in excellent infrastructure and the latest technology-driven learning resources. The campus in Gaborone is well known for being of international standards and many national and international events have been held on the premises due to the quality of the facilities. BU has already converted many of its light fittings in Gaborone Campus into eco friendly LED lights and has enormous plans in the pipeline to implement environmentally friendly projects in the university’s existing and future infrastructure.

The University has top-notch sporting facilities for basketball, netball, volleyball, soccer and chess. BU’s Gaborone campus has recently completed the modern mini-soccer turf suitable to play day and night. Studying in Lesotho The kingdom of Lesotho is a Parliamentary and Constitutional democracy, with a population of roughly 2.2 million people, which has the distinction of being surrounded by another country, the Republic of South Africa. It is one of the few remaining monarchies in Africa.

Botho University Lesotho campus is in Maseru, which is the country’s capital and the largest city. The name ‘Lesotho’ loosely translates into “the land of the people who speak Sesotho.” The official languages of Lesotho are Sesotho and English. Sesotho is closely related to Setswana which is the most widely spoken & indigenous language in Botswana. The local currency is the Lesotho loti, plural maloti (LSL). 1 USD = 13.25 LSL (approximately). Situated between 28 and 31 degrees south and between 27 and 30 degrees East, Lesotho lies entirely outside the tropics, at a considerable height above sea level, and is thus free of bilharzia and malaria. It has a land area of approximately 30, 555 km2, making it similar in size to Belgium or a little larger than the State of Maryland in the USA.

Lesotho is a conducive study environment and adventure awaits you in the Mountain Kingdom with a range of activities on land, on the snow and in the water. Lesotho is famous for its spectacular scenic beauty branded by breathtaking mountain ranges, towering peaks, a rich variety of flora and fauna, crystal clear streams, surging waterfalls, diverse culture and a snow blanket seen high in the mountains across the country in winter. A land of mountains, Lesotho is the o.nly country in the world which has all its land lying at altitudes more than 1500m above sea level; it is a land of heights and extremes.

The highest mountain in Southern Africa, ThabanaNtlenyana, is in Lesotho, with a height of 3, 482m, while the highest single-drop falls in Southern Africa, Maletsunyane, is also found there, with a height of 192m. Finally, Lesotho also has the highest abseiling cliff in the world at 204m. Often referred to as the “Switzerland of Africa”, it is blessed with a beautiful, often snow-capped range of mountains, the Maloti. The Kingdom’s central position is in the heart of Africa’s second-largest economy, South Africa, which means residents are well served by air, rail, and road links. Lesotho is only one hour by air or four hours by road from South Africa’s largest city, Johannesburg.
